Construction Continues On Water Country USA’s Newest Family Thrill Attraction

WILLIAMSBURG (February 3, 2014) – Construction of Water Country USA’s Colossal Curl™ continues despite freezing temperatures and snow storms over the past two weeks. Contractors began pouring the ride’s concrete footings over the weekend, and anticipate the installation of the ride’s vertical support structure to begin by mid-February.

The footings are large, reinforced blocks of concrete that will bear the weight of the 552-foot-long water slide and tower structure.

“Footings are a critical component of any construction project. They will form a solid foundation from which Colossal Curl can rise,” said Engineering Director Suzy Cheely who is overseeing the Colossal Curl construction project.

Once the footings are complete, work can begin on the vertical supports. Pre-assembly of the fiberglass sections that arrived in mid-December will take place at about the same time. Once complete, contractors will erect the slide sections onto the supports.

“That’s when Colossal Curl will start to take shape,” Cheely said.

True to its name, Colossal Curl will thrill guests with a high-adrenaline, action-packed water slide adventure. The park’s first family thrill attraction features a funnel element that will swish and swirl up to four riders aboard a cloverleaf-shaped raft before whisking them through the slide’s enclosed tubes on their way to a wave element that hurtles them high above the park.

The unique combination of funnel and wave thrill elements, makes Colossal Curl the only attraction of its kind in North America. The attraction will have the same 48-inch ride height requirement as Vanish Point®, which opened in 2011 and has thrilled guests with its drop-away floors and speed slides.

Water Country USA fans began speculating about the park’s new attraction last fall when the first of three teaser videos appeared on the Williamsburg theme parks’ official social media sites. A final video, released Nov. 12, ended the speculation with an official ride announcement. Click here to view the videos.
