Where is this? You are watching a 24/7 camera inside the SeaWorld Penguin Encounter at Sea World, San Diego where the temperature is kept at 25-27 degrees Fahrenheit year round.
How many penguins are here and what types are there? There are nearly 300 in all. Our penguin population at SeaWorld San Diego includes regal Emperor and King penguins, Adélie penguins, Gentoo penguins and Macaroni penguins.
Why is the picture blurry? The penguins can get so close to the camera housing that they get it wet. Plus, it's very cold in the exhibit (25-27°F) and things tend to ice over. So if things don't look great right now, check back soon. We wipe down/dry off the camera housing throughout the day.
Why is the picture so dark? The seasons of the Southern Hemisphere are opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. When continents above the equator experience spring and summer, the areas below the equator experience fall and winter. For most of the winter, antarctic penguins live in an environment of darkness or half-light. The lighting in the Penguin Encounter simulates what is occurring on the Antarctic continent. Lighting levels begin to increase in late August.
