Pawsome Rescue | Spring 2013

"Pawsome" Rescue Operation

In the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the SeaWorld® Rescue Team helped dogs and cats in need of a new home. The rescue team chaperoned 60 dogs and cats on a cross-country flight to the safe haven of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Southern California. The animals were facing loss and displacement from shelters that needed to make room for pets that needed shelter due to the storm. The animals were flown on a donated charter donated by Southwest Airlines.

(Mobile) Game On!

SeaWorld’s® first mobile game and mobile app lets people take the world of sea turtles and penguins wherever they go. During the game,Turtle Trek,™ players guide an adventurous sea turtle on a quest across the beach and into the water to find friends. SeaWorld's Epic Voyage  app lets families “explore” the Antarctic life of penguins where they can create and share augmented reality videos and photos. Lucky Buck

Buck, an 8-year-old male sea lion, is lucky to be alive after suffering a point-blank gunshot wound to his face. Thanks to the care provided by SeaWorld® San Diego’s rescue team, Buck has been given a second chance at life. After more than three months of rehabilitation at the park’s animal care center Buck was recently returned to his ocean home.

Freezin' for a Reason

From Florida to Texas, more than 1,000 brrrr-ave participants plunged into water as low as 46 degrees for a great cause: the Special Olympics. Two “Special Olympics’ Polar Plunges” were hosted by Aquatica™ water parks in San Antonio and Orlando. Combined, the chilly events raised more than $200,000 for the volunteer-driven athletic organization. This was the first year Aquatica™ Texas hosted the event while Aquatica™ Orlando hosted for the fourth time.

Laser Precision Care

Veterinarians at Busch Gardens® Tampa's Animal Care Center are using a state-of-the-art therapeutic laser to help care for some of the park’s animal inhabitants. They have successfully used the laser to treat older animals with arthritis, including an aged giraffe and eland antelope, and post-operatively to improve the healing process in chimps and gorillas. The laser has also been helpful in healing bone fractures in raptor wildlife rehab patients.

Highest Honors

Keeping watch over millions of swimming, splashing water park guests is serious business at SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment™. Recently the company put eight of its top lifeguards from its water parks around the country through an extensive week of training with the Red Cross of America. Upon completion the guards earned the Red Cross’ highest certification for aquatic safety specialist: Lifeguard Instructor Trainer. Now this dedicated group of lifeguards will return to their respective parks to help prepare more than 1,000 fellow lifeguards for the 2013 season.
